Dark Knight Trailer 3 Video
Here is a video clip of the upcoming 2008 American superhero film based on the fictional DC Comics character Batman. The film is a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins, which rebooted the Batman film series after an eight-year hiatus. Christopher Nolan returns as the director, and Christian Bale reprises the lead role. Batman's primary conflicts in the film come from his fight against the Joker (Heath Ledger) and his strained friendship with district attorney Harvey Dent / Aaron Eckhart).
The style seems to be consistent with the previous entry by Christopher Nolan. Nolan is clearly not the best action director out there and the trailer seems to indicate that action is not the selling point of the movie. Unlike other superhero film adaptations, The Dark Knight seems likely to be shot in an ultra-realistic fashion, using hardly any CGI. Evidently, the film's philosophy is to successfully address the following questions: if the character 'Batman' actually existed in the same universe in which we exist, what would he look and act like? If Gotham was a real city, what would it look like in the real world? If the circumstances in which a Joker character could come to be came to be, what would such such an individual turn out looking like, how would he go about obtaining his goals and aspirations? If a billionaire crime fighter wanted to build the best military-type motorcycle possible, how would it function in the real world? And so on.
As mentioned earlier, Nolan does not seem to be the best action director out there (I found the flashing split-second ultra close-up hand-to-hand combat sequences in Batman Begins rather uncompelling), however, as the director of one of my favorite movies of all time (Memento), I have a great deal of faith in what Nolan is capable of. Additionally, this time around his brother (who wrote Memento) helped write the script.
Heath Ledger's departure will cause more people to flock to see him in this movie out of morbid curiosity, I just hope this doesn't cause the public to gloss over what is looking to be one of the top performances of the year -- a scene of Ledger combing his hair while casually wielding a knife looked particularly interesting.
The trailer also shows clips of Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent tha tlooked relatively pedestrian, merely introducing the existence of the character, suggesting that he won't be playing a huge role this time around. There is also some footage of Maggie Gyllenhaal in this trailer replacing Katie Holmes' role, Rachel Dawes. I'm relatively indifferent as to how her performance pans out, its not likely to make a huge impact on the film either way.
Judging from all I've seen and heard about the movie so far, The Joker will be at the focal point of this film -- this trailer certainly doesn't depart from that assessment. This definitely will not be a bad thing due to the interesting nature of the character and what Ledger has done with the character.
All in all, the film is shaping up to be a huge mega-hit this summer, I'm predicting it to surpass Iron Man's Box Office numbers, but for some reason I'm getting the feeling that the overall critical consensus will not be as positive as Iron Man due to its ultra-serious and ultra-realistic interpretation of the Dark Knight. In my own opinion, it won't manage to compete with other summer-blockbusters popcorn-appeal, but it will be able to compete with academy-award level films at the end of the year in substance.
